Lot No. 426

Martino Altomonte

(Warsaw 1657–1745 Vienna)
The Ascension of the Virgin, oil on canvas, 39.2 x 64 cm, octogonal frame,

This bozzetto was probably produced in conjunction with Altomonte’s image of the High Altar of 1738 in the Abbey Church at Wilhering (see H. Etzlstorfer, Martino und Bartolomeo Altomonte, Ölskizzen und kleine Gemälde aus österreichischen Sammlungen, Salzburg 2002, p. 110, no. 15). The painting at Wilhering in its turn is closely related to Sebastiano Ricci’s altar painting of the same theme in the Karlskirche in Vienna (dated 1733/34).

The paintings 421-447 originate from a Southern German private collection, which was amassed over the last few decades with great connoisseurship and art historical interest. The collector, a doctor, specialized from early on in 18th-century Southern German and Austrian oil studies and bozzetti, alongside a number of Italian works of a similar quality. Thus a small, but choice collection was brought together, characterized by its owner’s cultivated taste and knowledge of artistic interconnections.
